As an artist it is important to look back at work previously done from time to time. You may not realize it at the time; however, your works in totality show growth and equally important - subconscious connections.
After perusing my portfolio of…SnackBags (most of my work is done on the SnackBag), it occurred to me that I feature an exorbitant amount of Disney themed Bags. As the 2nd oldest of seven children, I only dreamed of visiting Disney as an adolescent. Of course, flying a family of nine to Disney would surely require a 2nd mortgage. I had to remain patient and dream big.
As an adult however - I was lucky to marry a woman who loved Disney, perhaps more than I. This mutual love for Disney yielded a proposal (Disneyland Paris), over two dozen trips to Disneyworld and even a stop over at Disneyland CA on the way further West to our Bora Bora honeymoon. Since our journey as a family started via an engagement in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle (Paris 2014) - Disney and Family quickly became synonymous.
However, Family isn’t the only word that comes to mind when I think of Disney. As I examined my collection of Disney themed SnackBags for this reflection, three bags specifically stood out to me. These bags have a connection so subtle yet powerful that I felt slightly embarrassed for not realizing it before. All three bags represent “future”.
The EPCOT - a SnackBag created in April of 2024 utilized the classic and famous design of the Epcot Ball aka Spaceship Earth. EPCOT, which is an acronym for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow is the 2nd created Disney World Park (of four total parks). Built in 1982, this park is dedicated to the celebration of human achievement; however, originally conceived as a utopian city of the future.
The Moana 2 - a SnackBag created in November of 2024 pays homage to the original theatrical release poster. Similar to the original Moana movie, themes of this movie revolve around family and exploration; however, the stakes are slightly higher now. A legendary island known as ‘Motufetu’ was sunk by the malicious storm god, Nalo. Moana’s ancestor, Vasa reveals to Moana that the her people (Motunui) will go extinct in the future if she is unable to raise the legendary island of Motufetu. Ultimately, Moana raises the island and helps reconnect her people with the ocean - giving them all a bright future.
The New Client - a SnackBag created in June of 2024 was created to announce the upcoming birth of our 2nd child, another daughter named Campbell. This bag was packed and made its way to Disney World, where my daughter and I announced the exciting news via Instagram! With subtle touches of Disney, this bag represents family, growth and of course future - as I am now father to two beautiful girls - and have future plans to draw and pack many SnackBags for years to come!
