I previously listed 10 Influential Art Moments via bullets. These bullets (or moments) collectively tell my story from artist to art educator. Although all of these moments shape me - one specifically stands out from the rest. When my daughter, Briar entered Nursery School in the fall of 2021 - I was tasked with packing her snack. After a week of packing her snack in a plain brown paper bag - I realized that I was given the opportunity to make her smile in an unfamiliar environment. Nursery School was not home, but it was possible for her to bring a little piece of home with her. I grabbed some markers, wrote her name in bubble letters and added a few hearts. After the school day, I was surprised to find the bag I created in her backpack. It was crumpled and contained some snack crumbs... but she brought it back home! It meant enough to her that she kept it in lieu of tossing in the cafeteria garbage pail. My heart melted.
This was going to be a daily occurrence, as certain as the sun rising. Subsequent to this day, I have created hundreds, possibly thousands of colorful works of art on similar brown bags (now i refer to them as Snack Bags). As soon as I finish typing this, I will create yet another SnackBag - specifically a sheep, as per my daughter’s request (now in 2nd grade). To me...this media represents home and unconditional love. It is blank and waiting to be colored. This alone fills me with joy. What will I draw next? What will my daughter request next? How many days until my younger daughter goes to Nursery School? This plain media represents a father’s love, a bright future and happy children!
